The makeup of the Glendale City Council has remained the same for five years and will stay the same for at least another two. Mayor Jerry P. Weiers and three Council members won their re-election races in the Aug. 4 primary election. City Council recognized the final vote totals in a special meeting last week, officially electing the four to another term.
Only Mr. Weiers' mayoral race and Yucca District Councilwoman Joyce Clark's race were contested. Vice Mayor Ray Malnar of the Sahuaro District and Cactus District Councilman Ian Hugh ran unopposed.
Mr. Weiers defeated challenger Michelle Robertson 53.4% to 46.3%. Mr. Weiers had 20,222 votes to Ms. Robertson's 17,539 in the city-wide election, according to the Maricopa County Recorder's Office.
In the Yucca District, Ms. Clark defeated challenger Bryce Alexander 57.4% to 41.9%. Ms. Clark had 2,811 votes versus 2,053 for Mr. Alexander.
In the two uncontested Council races, Mr. Malnar won 98.6% of the vote in the Sahuaro District. In the Cactus District, Mr. Hugh has 98.8% of the vote.
City Council and mayoral elections only go to the November general election if a candidate fails to win more than 50% of the vote in the August primary.
