Ironwood High School's Unified flag hootball team, coached by Lisa Lopez, won the AIA Silver Division State Championship, beating the team from Youngker High School in Buckeye.
The Eagles won the title game 33-30 on Oct. 24 at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better season. Our athletes and partners worked well together, forming lasting friendships on and off the field,” Coach Lisa Lopez stated in a press release.
Although the Eagles participated in unified flag football last year, is the first year the Arizona Interscholastic Association has offered a unified flag football program which allows for a more competitive season and playoffs.
Ironwood High School follows AIA and Special Olympics rules and guidelines, which consists of regular practices, scrimmage games and a qualifying tournament, all to prepare them for state.
In addition to Coach Lopez, Coach Rodriguez worked with the team regularly this fall, preparing them for competition.
