Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Co-Founder stars in ““Gypsy”,” an iconic musical with lyrics by the late, legendary Stephen Sondheim.
The musical opens on Friday, Jan. 21, and plays through Sunday, Feb. 20.
“Gypsy” brings in the 2022 season at Arizona Broadway Theatre and is speculated by many, including New York Times critic Ben Brantley, to be the greatest of all American musicals. At the heart of the musical is the gregarious Mama Rose, whose journey made critic Frank Rich call “Gypsy,” “Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to King Lear.”
Cassandra Klaphake, co-founder and artistic producer of Arizona Broadway Theatre, stars in ABT’s upcoming production. Cassandra has performed on the ABT stage in various leading roles, most recently Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Francesca in Bridges of Madison County. The musical features songs that have become standards of the musical theatre canon, including Some People, Let Me Entertain You, Rose’s Turn, and the show-stopping Everything’s Coming Up Roses.
The music was composed by Jule Styne, and the lyrics were written by the incomparable Stephen Sondheim, who recently passed away in November of 2021.
“Sondheim’s brilliant work, his contribution to the musical theatre art form, is unmeasurable,” said Klaphake. “It is up to us now to uphold his legacy and to pass on the musical intricacies and the masterful wordplay to younger generations — to hold true to his unique style and teach others to revere and appreciate the gifts that he leaves behind. There will be no other like him. He was truly one of a kind.”
