The city’s historic downtown will be the site for an official ceremony to turn on the new cafe lighting stretched over Glendale Avenue from 58th Drive to 58th Avenue. Residents are welcome at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30 as the lights officially go on for the first time.
Discussions to add decorative lighting to enhance visitors’ experience in Historic Downtown Glendale began in September 2020, and the installation wrapped up in late May.
The $721,000 cost of the project is funded through a Community Development Block Grant, which allows specific uses toward beautification projects.
The turning-on ceremony will coincide with the final night of the Glendale Summer Band live music series.
The band, now in its 56th year as the longest-running community band in Arizona, performs a free concert at 8 p.m. every Thursday night during June at the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheatre, 5850 W. Glendale Ave., in Murphy Park.
The night of the cafe lighting ceremony will include the Summer Band’s season finale — an 8 p.m. show titled “Celebrate America”! and featuring patriotic songs.
