Glendale’s Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center, 5600 W. Union Hills Drive, has partially reopened for use by active members only after closing in March to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The center’s limited reopening began last week, with operating hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. In its initial reopening stage, the center is open only on a first-come-first-served basis to active members only. Glendale Parks and Recreation says members should expect wait times if coming during peak hours.
Only three areas of the center are reopening, all on a limited basis with social distancing and disinfecting efforts in place: the fitness center, the gymnasium and the walking/jogging track. The center’s pool, rock wall, aerobics center, racquetball court and locker rooms remain closed.
The three areas reopening will have limitations. Only 10 people will be allowed in any of the areas at a time. Recreation sessions will last 90 minutes with all three areas closing for 15 minutes in between as staff cleans commonly touched places.
In the fitness center, only cardio and circuit training equipment is available. Free weight and weight machines remain closed “because there are just too many touch points,” said Glendale Recreation Administrator Paul King. Every other cardio machine, such as a treadmill or stationary bicycle, remains closed to enforce social distancing.
Only basketball and pickleball are allowed in the gymnasium. Only singles pickleball is allowed to prevent two people being on one side of the net. Only shootaround basketball is allowed, not contact games. Only two people are allowed per hoop and players must bring their own basketballs.
The middle of three lanes on the walking/jogging track is closed. Walkers and joggers are encouraged to only use the middle lane for passing.
