Brelby Theatre Company is up for 14 ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence next month.
Brelby, founded in 2009 by Shelby and Brian Maticic, and located at 7154 N. 58th Drive, in Glendale, will be among the Valley theater companies honored when the “Zoni” awards recognize the 2019-20 season of live theater performances.
More than 35 theaters Valley-wide participate in the Zonis, with over 150 productions adjudicated every year.
The ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence’s celebration takes place at 8p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, preceded by the youth celebration at 5:30 p.m. While the actual ceremony will take place at the Virginia G. Piper Theater in Scottsdale, the celebration will be a ticket-only live stream event. Individual tickets are $12.50, and household tickets are $20.
Ticket sales from the annual Zonis not only underwrite the costs of the performance, but also help support the costs of managing the adjudication process of the ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence and other programs, such as the COVID-19 pandemic relief fund which has been providing support to individual artists and theaters in need.
Brelby also was selected as this year’s straight play representation, and the Glendale theater for the first time will perform at the ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence ceremony. In the adult ceremony, the Zonis will see a selection from Brelby’s production of “Alice’s Canvas,” which is nominated for Best Overall Play among its seven nods.
Brelby’s nominations are: Best Overall Production, Play (“Alice’s Canvas); Best Overall Production, Musical (“Evil Dead: the Musical”); Actress In A Supporting Role, Play (Ian Rey Sausedo, “Alice’s Canvas”); Choreography (Brian Maticic, “Evil Dead: the Musical”); Costume Design (Shelby Elise Maticic, “Alice’s Canvas”); Property Design (James Beneze and Rebecca Ulbrich, “Alice’s Canvas”); Artistic Specialization (Blood & Gore FX Design, Brian Maticic, Ian Rey Sausedo, Shelby Huston and Kayleen Harshbarger for “Evil Dead: the Musical” and Candarian Demon Moosehead and Clifford Alfrey for “Evil Dead: the Musical”); Original Writing (Brian Maticic, Luke Gomez, Ellyn Heald and Shelby Maticic for “Alice’s Canvas,” Brian Maticic for “Luna & Solis,” and Shelby Elise Maticic for “Marie’s Reverie”); Original Score (Clayton Caufman and Ben Cleaveland for “Alice’s Canvas,” and Brian Maticic, Helen Morris and Ben Cleaveland for “Luna & Solis”); and Fight Choreography (Brian Maticic for “Alice’s Canvas”).
