Glendale resident turning 105 shares advice for a long life

Audrie Hyslop’s big day coming Thursday

Posted

On Sept. 15, 1917, World War I had been raging for three years. In the U.S., gas was $0.15 a gallon and a quart of milk was $0.09. And Audrie Hyslop, currently a resident of Inspira Arrowhead in Glendale, was born.

Audrie is turning 105 on Thursday, and to mark this incredible milestone, her senior living community will be throwing her a birthday party. Family members are flying in from both U.S. coasts to celebrate with her.

Audrie has three children, five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Though she says she has done almost everything she ever wanted to do, Audrie recalls fondly her trips across the country and to Europe and wishes she had traveled a bit more. Her advice for living a long life is to be sure to have dessert with meals, and to not take medications unless absolutely necessary.

Audrie (née Clark) was born in Ontario, Canada. Her father was a prolific Canadian inventor, with one of his notable inventions being a coupling for the nozzle of a hose. This was later developed into the coupling used by NASA to separate the stages of its rockets.

Moving to the United States with her family at age 7, Audrie attended 11 different schools in her first 12 grades. She became a U.S. citizen at age 25 in Warren, Ohio.

She was married to her husband, Robert (Bob) Hyslop for 55 years before his death in 1997. Bob was an engineer with the Hughes Tool Company in California up until his retirement. Audrie was a bookkeeper until her marriage. Along with taking care of her children and home, she enjoyed baking a fresh dessert each night to serve with dinner. She also enjoyed researching and investing in stocks, bonds and real estate.

Inspira Arrowhead, a Cadence Community, is located at 20240 N. 78th Ave., Glendale.
