Glendale police release body cam video from fatal April shooting

Situation started as domestic violence call, led to hours-long standoff

Glendale police on Friday released body cam video of an officer-involved shooting back in April that left a suspect dead.

The incident stemmed from a domestic violence call to which officers were responding in the area near 61st and Olive avenues.

A member of Glendale’s SWAT team killed the suspect, identified later as Anthony Hood-Schaffner, 28, who first opened fire at officers around 2 p.m. on April 14 after an hours-long standoff just a couple blocks south of Glendale Community College.

Police had responded after a 911 call for domestic violence came in at 2:15 a.m. accusing Hood-Schaffner who, according to police, was  violating a court order and was in the neighborhood making threats against his ex-girlfriend with a gun. He barricaded himself with his gun to his own head in a nearby camper.

Ultimately, a Glendale K9 unit was sent in through a window, according to GPD, and Hood-Schaffner then started shooting at the officers, striking the K9 handler. A SWAT operator returned fire with a handgun and fatally shot the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The K9 was not injured.
