Glendale police ID suspect from officer involved shooting

Posted

Glendale police have identified the suspect in custody from Tuesday’s officer involved shooting.

Authorities say Gabino Hernandez, 24, of Glendale, was arrested after allegedly shooting at an officer in the area of 7900 W. San Miguel just after 3 p.m. on July 13.

Police report that an off-duty patrol officer leaving the Gateway substation observed a vehicle involved in a single vehicle hit-and-run collision in the area of 8600 W. Cardinal Way. The officer called 9-1-1 and followed the suspect, Hernandez, who was the single occupant of the vehicle.

Hernandez drove the vehicle to a park in the area near West San Miguel and jumped out of the vehicle while the vehicle was still in motion. The vehicle continued forward and crashed into a canal, submerging the vehicle. The officer continued to follow Hernandez and confronted him while identifying himself as a Glendale Police Officer.

Hernandez turned toward the officer and allegedly fired one round toward the officer, and the officer returned fire. The officer looked away to put his vehicle in reverse and heard another round being fired. No one was hit by the gunfire.

Hernandez fled through the park and stole a bicycle while fleeing the area. The officer lost sight of Hernandez, and responding officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood.

Officers eventually located Hernandez in the area of 7700 W. Medlock Drive where he was taken into custody.

Hernandez was booked into jail and is facing aggravated assault charges. Other charges may still be pending.
