Despite pushback from some Glendale residents, Glendale shut down Glen Lakes Golf Course, one of two municipal courses in the city, and sold the land to a housing developer. The specifics on the development to replace the course are still up for discussion.

The Glendale Planning Commission will consider a general plan change and a rezone Thursday that would pave the way for the developer, Homes by Towne, to construct a 173-home single-family housing development on the 43-acre lot northeast of 55th and Northern avenues. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Glendale Civic Center, 5750 W. Glenn Drive. Watch the meeting live or later at the city's YouTube channel or Facebook page.

Plans also shows that the developer will construct a narrow park on both the west and east of the property, connected by a walking trail to the north of the property. The 10 acres of park land will be handed over to city control upon completion to become a neighborhood park. Some advocates to keep the golf course said they if keeping the course wasn't an option, they would like to see green space maintained.

In Thursday's meeting, the commission will also consider a general plan and zoning change for planned apartment complex on 16 acres northwest of Loop 101 and Bell Road and a general plan and rezone for a 160-acre property southeast of 115th and Glendale avenues to be used as a landfill and for sand and gravel mining. It will also consider conditional use permits for a Popeye's drive thru, a gun shop and a personal training business.
