Tom Blodgett/Independent Newsmedia
A family gathers around a "Light the World Giving Machine" at Gilbert's Water Tower Plaza to make a selection on where to make a charitable donation. Glendale also have a machine in 2022.
The “Light the World Giving Machine” campaign will expand to Glendale this year and continue in Gilbert, where the charitable donation machines have been popular during the holiday season since first being there in 2018.
The machines, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be available from Nov. 18-Jan. 2 at Water Tower Plaza, 45 W. Page Ave., Gilbert, and from Nov. 22-Jan. 7 at Murphy Park, 5809 W. Glendale Ave., Glendale.
The machines provide an opportunity for the community to give to local and global charities. Giving Machine items range in price from $3 to $300, and include staples such as clothing, personal hygiene, meals, school supplies, medicine and even livestock. The LDS Church covers all operational costs so that 100% of donations go directly to the charity of choice.
This year, the Giving Machines in the valley will feature items from several local and global nonprofit organizations.
For the East Valley Gilbert location:
AZCEND
Midwest Food Bank
Gathering Humanity
Special Olympics Arizona
House of Refuge
African Girls Hope Foundation
For the West Valley Glendale location:
St. Vincent de Paul
OCJ Kids

Special Olympics of Arizona is featured in the Giving Machines for the first time this year.
“The donations from the Light the World Giving Machine will ensure individuals with intellectual disabilities across the state can continue to receive free services, high quality sports equipment and overall a sports experience on par with high-level sports organizations,” Jamie Heckerman, president & CEO of Special Olympics Arizona, said in a press release.
The LDS Church first unveiled the machines in 2017, and the number of locations has grown to 24 cities worldwide for this Christmas season.
Those unable to visit a machine in person can still participate by making an online donation at LightTheWorld.org/give.
