Glendale firefighters honor fallen heroes with memorial markers
Hydrants will honor those killed in the line of duty

The Glendale Fire Department is paying respects to those who died in the line of duty with special memorial markers.
The “Memorial Hydrant Project” honors those who died while serving the Glendale community. The concept is that a hydrant located near the location will be either kept yellow for a fallen firefighter or painted blue for a fallen police officer. In addition to the paint color, a special metallic placard will be placed on the hydrant containing the person’s name as well as the date of their passing.
The placards are being donated, and the first dedication was for Glendale police officer Anthony Holly.
Mr. Holly was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 19, 2007. The memorial is located on the northwest corner of 60th Avenue and Oregon Avenue in Glendale. The fire hydrant has been painted blue in his memory and members of the Glendale Fire Department will return on the anniversary of Mr. Holly’s passing to refresh the memorial.
“When a firefighter is dispatched to a call like this, it’s the day we hope we are at our very best, make all the right decisions and do all we can to save that person’s life,” Glendale Fire Chief Terry Garrison stated in a news release. “On that day we fought hard to save Officer Holly’s life, but ultimately we lost that fight and that moment changed not only all of our lives but Officer Holly’s family’s life forever.”
The Glendale Fire Department will mark the hydrants throughout the year of police officers and firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. The Glendale Police Department has had three officers and a K9 die in the line of duty. The Glendale Fire Department has lost one firefighter in the line of duty.
“This memorial is not only a reminder of that painful event 14 years ago, but a reminder that our two departments are in this together,” Glendale Police Chief Chris Briggs stated. “We hope Officer Holly’s family sees this not as a symbol of his loss, but as a symbol that he will always be a proud member of the City of Glendale’s service community.”
