Glendale car accident leaves 1 child dead

Posted

A child is dead after a Wednesday morning accident in Glendale.

Just before 10:30 a.m., Glendale police reports that a family of five was entering the Walmart near 56th Avenue and Northern Avenue. The family consisted of three adult females (the children’s mother, their aunt and their grandmother), a 3-year-old male and a 4-year-old female. The family crossed the parking lot and were walking on the sidewalk northbound when they were struck by a vehicle.

According to detectives, a 68-year-old female was driving a black Nissan Frontier. The driver backed out of a parking space, came to a stop and then went forward back into the parking space. When doing so, she struck a parked car and hopped onto the sidewalk, striking the family.

During the impact, the 4-year-old female was pinned under the car. The pickup truck also managed to strike two other cars while trying to back the truck up before coming to a stop.

Witnesses began performing CPR on the child before paramedics arrived on the scene. When paramedics arrived the 4-year-old was transported with life threatening injuries, and the 3-year-old male was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

The 4-year-old female died at the hospital.

The children’s mother was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening and the grandmother was treated on the scene. The children’s aunt suffered no injuries.

Detectives are still actively investigating, and the name of the Nissan Frontier driver has not been released.

At this time there is no sign of driver impairment, according to Glendale police, which adds that charges may be pending in this incident.
