Glendale blood drive aims to reduce critical shortage

Vitalant: 600+ donors needed every day

Posted

In response to the critical shortage of blood announced last week by Vitalant, seven Banner hospitals, including a Glendale site, have partnered with Vitalant to host community blood drives.

A drive will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, 5555 W. Thunderbird Road, Conference Room 6, in Glendale.

Residents are urged to roll up their sleeves in support of patients, as blood drive cancellations forced by COVID-19 challenges continue to affect donation rates. While donor vacations also reduce the number of people giving blood this time of year, heavy traffic on the highways has increased the potential for accidents and the need for blood.

Visit vitalant.org/Banner for Banner blood drive locations and appointments.

Leading into the Independence Day holiday week, supplies have fallen 50% below required levels for O-negative and O-positive blood – the universal blood types that are needed in emergency, trauma and shortage situations. Vitalant is the nonprofit blood provider for 100% of the hospitals in 11 of the 15 Arizona counties, including Maricopa.

While all blood types are needed, the greatest demand is for donors with O-negative and O-positive, the universal blood types.

“While we are enjoying holidays and summer vacations, it is important to remember that more than 600 donors are needed every day,” said Sid Lewis, Sr. Director of Donor Recruitment for Vitalant’s Southwest Division, stated in a news release.

In appreciation for saving lives this summer, all donors will be automatically entered into Vitalant’s summer raffle to win a 2021 VW Tiguan, donated by the Valley Volkswagen dealers.
