GCC earns gold award for campus wellness

Posted

Glendale Community College is one of only 153 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by Exercise is Medicine for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus.

GCC’s Fitness and Wellness program helped the campus earn the gold level designation from the Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIM-OC) program. The gold award is the highest honor bestowed by EIM-OC.

“It is such an honor for GCC to earn this prestigious award among an international lineup of colleges and universities. At GCC we take great pride in our health and fitness programs that enhance the wellbeing of our students, employees and local community,” the campus’ Fitness and Wellness Department personal trainer program director Louise So stated in a news release. “Through interdepartmental collaboration, students from nursing, counseling, nutrition and many other academic programs are encouraged to seek guidance and expertise from our campus fitness professionals. It’s a win-win situation for all involved.”

The college has a main campus at 6000 W. Olive Ave., and a North Campus at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road.

GCC Fitness and Wellness created and sponsored physical activity programs to encourage students, faculty and staff to work together to improve the health and well-being of individuals and the campus community overall. To earn the Gold medal, GCC created a referral system where campus health care providers assess students’ physical activity and refer students as necessary to a certified fitness professional as part of medical treatment.

“We are thrilled to recognize these campuses’ commitment to make movement a part of daily campus culture and equip students with tools to cultivate lifelong physical activity habits, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Exercise is Medicine vice president Robyn Stuhr stated.

Of the 153 campuses recognized this year, 73 received gold, 59 silver and 21 bronze. All gold, silver and bronze universities and colleges were officially recognized as part of the 2021 virtual Exercise is Medicine World Congress, held in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting.
