A fire at a Glendale elementary school was extinguished with no injuries, but not before the school was evacuated Tuesday.
Glendale Fire Department Captain Ashley Losch reports that firefighters arrived on scene at Horizon Elementary School, 8520 N. 47th Ave., to find smoke in one of the hallways. Upon further investigation crews found a fire in a bathroom.
The buildings were safely evacuated and none of the children or teachers were injured, Losch noted.
Crews immediately extinguished the fire and began the lengthy process of evacuating the smoke. Glendale Fire reports that it appears a roll of toilet paper was set on fire and placed in the toilet.
There was very little fire but lots of smoke, thus the sprinkler system did not get triggered, Losch added.
Parents are asked to come to campus at 1:30 p.m. for a one-hour early dismissal
The fire will remain under investigation.
“In an abundance of caution, we are implementing an early release schedule to allow for fire fighters evacuate any lingering smoke,” the school posted to its social media at 1:30 p.m. “All families may pick up students at the Horizon front office beginning at 1:30 p.m.”
The school is part of the Glendale Elementary School District.
