Downtown Glendale to host Mother’s Day celebration

Event includes charity drive to collect books for local libraries

A Mother’s Day celebration will take place in Historic Downtown Glendale this weekend.

The 16th Annual Mother’s Day Celebration goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Mom and families can find gift ideas at locally-owned shops and restaurant options.

“The locally owned businesses in the Catlin Court and Old Towne shopping and dining districts have created this event to celebrate the treasured love of moms,” Lorraine Zomok, event co-chairperson and Historic Downtown Glendale Merchants Association president, shared in a statement.

The day will include make-and-take activities (some have a nominal fee), artist demonstrations, and photo ops. Returning this year is the Flower Trail, where moms will have the opportunity to pick up free carnations at participating shops (while supplies last) to make a bouquet. The debut of a special charm for the ongoing Charm Trail bracelet will also be available.

Historic Downtown Glendale businesses support numerous charities throughout the year to give back to the community. This year’s Mother’s Day event charity recipient is the Glendale Public Libraries.

Event attendees are encouraged to bring new and gently read books for Glendale’s public libraries. Youth books, adult fiction by best-selling authors and current nonfiction titles are especially needed. However, the libraries are no longer able to accept textbooks and magazines.

More than 80% of the businesses in Historic Downtown Glendale are women-owned. Several of the shops feature mother and daughter teams including Glendale Flowers and Gifts (Sue Garner/Mom and Danea Mensi/daughter), Bears & More (Linda Burner/mother-in-law and Valerie Burner/daughter-in-law), and Coyote Oatie Cookies (Denise Quintana/mother and Delfina Quintana/daughter).

Start the Saturday event at the Arizona Information Center, located at 5836 W. Palmaire Ave. Downtown docents will provide event information and provide the activity list and walking map.

The Mother’s Day Celebration is presented by the Historic Downtown Glendale Merchants Association, a merchant driven organization.
