The city of Glendale’s Cholla Water Treatment Plant looks set to get a multi-phased set of improvements.

At its 5:30 p.m. voting session the City Council on Tuesday, April 11 will consider entering into a design agreement with Wilson Engineers, LLC for engineering services for improvements at the Cholla Water Treatment Plant.

The amount is not to exceed $1.6 million over the entire term of the agreement. The plant is located just off 51st Avenue between Cactus Road and Peoria Avenue.

The Cholla Water Treatment Plant is a conventional surface water treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 30 million gallons per day, according to the city’s water services department. Cholla began operations in 1978 with an original design capacity of 20 million gallons per day.

In 2001, additional filters were added to increase the plant treatment capacity to 30 million gallons per day.

The plant treats water from the Salt River Project Arizona Canal and supplies potable water to the city’s distribution system.

The 2023 improvements project includes assessment and selection of a pre-oxidation system, condition assessment of plant equipment, and design and construction of improvements identified by the assessments, according to water services. This project will be divided into multiple phases and constructed over several budget years.

Engineering services provided by Wilson include asset and structure condition assessments, design of process improvements identified by the assessments, and design of a pre-oxidant system.
