The Glendale Police Department on Wednesday announced that one of their officers has died.

A department spokesman said that Lt. Jason Zimmerman lost his nearly six year battle with cancer a few weeks ago.

Zimmerman served almost 20 years with the Glendale Police Department in a variety of different positions.

“Jason served our department with pride and humility,” GPD Chief Chris Briggs shared in a statement. “He always showed a strong dedication, first and foremost as a husband and father, as a leader in our department and for our community and finally enormous bravery and dedication to his fighting cancer. Through it all Jason always had a smile on his face and kept to his mission of spreading the message of being kind. We send our deepest condolences to his wife and son…may he rest in peace.”

One day earlier, the Glendale Fire Department reported the loss of firefighter Mark Fowl, who began his career with GFD in 2002, and lost his battle with cancer of the brain.

“We ask you to pray for us, and our brothers and sisters at our Glendale Fire Department, during what is becoming a very difficult week,” Glendale Public Safety Media Relations Manager Jose Santiago shared.

The Glendale Police Department shared video of a recent procession by many of Lt. Jason Zimmerman’s friends and co-workers to show how much he meant to the department.
