Letter: Williams Field book has 'really good story'

Posted

I was interested to read your article, “No probable cause found in Williams Field book assignment case.”  When I first heard that the Williams Field High School teacher might be arrested for assigning the book "Homegoing"  by Yaa Gyasi for her students to read, I wondered what was in the book that so bothered people, so I checked it out of the Bell Library.  I thought I would read a few chapters to see why it was possibly being banned.  As a Library Science minor, I wondered what would make a book worth banning. However, once I started reading this book, I was hooked. It was a generational history of two Black families and was a really good story; I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The little bit of sexually explicit material just furthered the story and should not have bothered a normal high school reader.   I wondered if the person who complained about it had even bothered to read it.

I’m glad that “No probable cause” was found.
