Chandler students among winners in statewide essay contest

A pair of Chandler-area students are among the 20 winners of the AZ529 Essay contest.

State Treasurer Kimberly Yee challenged fifth- and sixth-graders to submit essays describing their dream job and how they will obtain it.

The winners were chosen from among 627 entries that represented every Arizona county and district and included charter, private and homeschool students.

Ananya Sulaya is a fifth-grader at New Vistas Center for Education in Chandler who wrote about wanting to become an Olympic swimmer.

Ethan Lillie is a fifth-grade student at Basis Chandler School who shared his dream of becoming a pilot.

The winning students were honored during a ceremony at the Arizona State Capitol on Oct. 29.

They were each presented with a giant check for $529, representing the deposits, for that amount, they’ll receive in their AZ529 savings accounts.
