San Tan Valley’s Joe Foss American Legion Post 97 has formed the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 97 for the “male descendants of U.S. military veterans.”

The squadron will “honor and continue their family's legacy of service through patriotic programs, youth development and community leadership,” according to a press release from the post.

Sons, adopted sons, stepsons, grandsons or great-grandsons of American Legion members or honorably discharged U.S. veterans who served between April 6, 1917 and Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941 to the present are eligible to join Squadron 97. Membership is open to all ages.

“Young members can take part in enriching programs such as ‘The Ten Ideals’ and

‘The Five-Point Program of Service’ designed to promote patriotism, responsibility and personal development,” the release stated.

Regular Squadron 97 meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at the San Tan Valley Veterans Center, 5764 E. Hunt Highway in Florence.

For more information or to apply, email squadron97sal@gmail.com or visit the https://stvlegion.com/sal-squadron.

The Sons of the American Legion was founded in 1932 and “provides members with opportunities to give back to their communities while preserving the values and heritage of our nation,” the release continued.
