New traffic changes set at Florence roundabout project

Posted

Drivers in Florence will be seeing traffic control changes at the intersection of State Route 287 and State Route 79B beginning Monday, June 10.

The changes are the result of construction of the town’s dual roundabout project, which is heading into the final stretch.

During the upcoming traffic change, the northern roundabout near Burger King will be open with limited, single/left lane access, the primary driveway for Burger King will be closed and access to the restaurant will be available west of the main entrance across from Campbell Avenue to the south.

The speed limit will be reduced to 35 miles per hour and a vehicle width restriction of 12 feet will be in place. ADOT cautions drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction workers and equipment.

The Arizona Department of Transportation stated that the traffic changes are scheduled to last about two months.

The dual roundabout project is a partnership with ADOT, the town of Florence and the Maricopa Association of Governments. Key elements of the project include:

  • Constructing a multiple-lane roundabout at SR 287/SR 79B
  • Constructing a single-lane roundabout at SR 79B/Florence Heights Drive
  • Realigning the west end of Florence Heights Drive
  • Reconstructing local streets and driveways within the project limits
  • Constructing new sidewalks and multi-use pathways to improve accessibility
  • Installing new curb and gutter and stormwater systems including retention basins within the project limits
  • Replacing and improving roadway lighting
  • Adding aesthetics include decomposed granite, decorative median paving and town entry monument

The project started  in January and is scheduled to be completed in late summer.
