Mayor, council member honored at state conference

Outgoing Florence Mayor Tara Walter and outgoing Councilmember Kristen Larsen were honored during the 2024 League of Arizona Cities & Towns Conference.

The conference took place Aug. 27-30 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

The two were recognized during the conference’s League Service Awards “for their outstanding dedication to local government,” a town of Florence Facebook post stated.

Walter celebrated 12 years of service, while Larsen was recognized for her eight years on the Florence Town Council.

Walter opted not to run for a third term in order to take on Pinal County Schools Superintendent Jill Broussard in the Republican primary on July 30. Walter lost to Broussard.

Larsen did not run for reelection.

On the first day of the conference, mayors and vice mayors from towns and cities across the state gathered to discuss policy goals and contribute to the development of the AZ Cities' Municipal Policy Statement for 2025.

During the conference’s opening session, Alicia Sullivan and Aidan Rankin, chair and vice chair of the Florence Teen Council, represented the town as flag-bearers and later joined youth councils and commissions throughout Arizona for the League's Youth Program, a day “dedicated to leadership, networking and empowering teens to make a positive impact in their communities,” the post stated.

Members of the Florence Teen Council also led  a short presentation where they invited their peers to the town’s First Annual Teen Leadership Symposium on Friday, Sept. 13, in Florence.
