Lux: Running a country not like business

In response to the letter written by someone from the Surprise Chamber of Commerce, the headline reads the “Chamber wants politicians to focus on relief.” The letter then lists several key measures Congress should address.

The second one listed is “Liability protection against unwarranted lawsuits.”

First, this is not what the legal protection really is. What Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell came out on public TV and said was that no relief bill would pass the Senate without this protection being included in the relief package.

What this actually means is that there are only four meat packing companies left in the entire United States, and three are owned and operated by foreign countries. Brazil is the largest.

This bill would allow foreign countries to operate slipshod working conditions for workers in the meat packing industry and there would be no way workers could sue for liability if they are harmed on the job.

This is not an unwarranted lawsuit. Without legal protection, companies could go back to the good old days when working conditions were deplorable — as many countries’ working conditions are even now.

The only unwarranted lawsuits at present are those by the Trump Administration, knowing full well that even if every vote was recounted and Trump won the state of Pennsylvania, he’d still lose because [President-elect Joe] Biden has such an overwhelming number of votes, both popular votes and the Electoral College votes.

The purpose of the “misinformation” is to get those who voted for Trump, and want to think there’s a chance “their team” might still win, stirred up to make the headlines all about Trump as usual.

Meanwhile, the man who is now President of the United States is firing heads of government agencies and replacing those career employees (who will lose pensions, etc.) with his cronies or donors.

He’s working hard to make sure American citizens and especially the Biden administration, have as difficult a time as possible during the next four years.

I’m assuming he’ll then try for another four years when Biden has to fight the pandemic, racism, immigration, infrastructure, and most of all, an economic crisis.

When [former President Barack] Obama lost, he spent the time between the election and swearing in to do the right thing. That’s the time allowed for the two administrations to sit down and pass on the information and procedures needed for seamless continuance of our government.

This is what comes from having someone think of the country as a business. It’s not a business.

It’s us, citizens, who send our hard-earned tax money to our elected representatives to get done those things that need doing — like keeping us safe, building infrastructure and managing our foreign affairs.

It’s not a job for an amateur who isn’t even willing to listen and learn from the professionals around him.
