Anthem K-8 in Florence was put on lockdown Monday following an armed robbery at a Subway restaurant.

The Florence Police Department reports that about 9 a.m. “a white male wearing sunglasses, a black shirt and khaki-colored pants armed with what was believed to be a black firearm” entered the Subway at 3235 N. Hunt Highway, Florence Police Chief Bruce Walls stated in an email.

The man demanded an unspecified amount of money from a worker at the Subway and then left the store on foot.

“Police arrived and set up a perimeter,” Walls’ statement continued, “however (they) were unable to locate the suspect. Camera footage is being reviewed to gather additional information at this time. No one was harmed.”

As police were searching for the suspect, Anthem K-8, 2700 N. Anthem Way, was placed on “instructional lockdown,” according to a Facebook post from the school’s principal, Leah Alisa.

“During this instructional lockdown, students and staff will continue their regular classroom activities but all exterior doors will remain locked. This measure is being taken to ensure the continued safety of everyone on campus,” the statement continued.

At about 1:30 p.m., police cleared the school, and it resumed its normal schedule.

“We will follow normal procedures to dismiss all students at the end of the day. Those students who normally take the bus will do so along with students who walk home or get picked up. Parents may come to pick up their student(s) if they choose,” Alisa stated.
