Florence has hired a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office veteran to serve as the new police chief.
Matthew Thomas, who brings more than 31 years of law enforcement experience, including 24 years in leadership roles, becomes chief of the Florence Police Department effective May 19.
Thomas currently serves as PCSO of PCSO, where he plays a role in overseeing operations, developing public safety strategies and strengthening community partnerships.
He replaces Bruce Walls, who has been pulling double duty as chief and town manager since September.
“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Thomas to the town of Florence,” Walls stated in a town press release. “His dedication to public safety, extensive leadership experience and commitment to community engagement make him a great addition to our team. I have full confidence that he will continue to build on the department’s strong foundation and serve our residents with excellence.”
Thomas is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations program and the National Association of Counties Leadership Academy.
As police chief, Thomas will oversee all operations of the Florence Police Department, working closely with town leadership, officers and the community to enhance public safety, the release continued.
