Feess: Ideas on immigration, gun control

Posted

I, like most Americans, am frustrated by Congress’s inabilities to do anything toward solving pressing current problems. I would like to suggest two remedies here on which members of both parties might be able to agree.

First, in reaction to mass shooting, Al Cardenas, Republican strategist, speaking on “Meet the Press” offered the suggestion that assault-styles weapons purchases might be regulated differently from other firearms with a special license requiring perhaps a more extensive background check and longer waiting period. (Mr. Cardenas points out that we have special licensing to drive an 18 wheeler. We also have special licensing to drive a motorcycle.)

The advantages to this proposal are that it would prevent an unstable person from purchasing such a weapon and using it to commit mass murder in the same week while not infringing in any way upon gun enthusiasts. This might not do much good, but too often we use the excuse that we cannot do everything, so we do nothing.

Secondly, as to the problem of surging migration at the border and especially the problem of overcrowding of minors at detention centers, does it not make sense to reclassify the 15 to 18 year old detainees as “adults,” subject to adult treatment?

Large numbers of “unaccompanied minors” are in this age range. They are making the journey because they are as capable as an adult. Take them out of the pool of “children” to be cared for and the situation should become much more manageable.
