In early returns, with 133,868 votes counted, Proposition 486 for continuing Pinal County’s half-cent excise tax for road maintenance is passing with more than 75% in favor.

The initial drop of results at about 8 p.m. Nov. 5 is from early ballots that have been received prior to Election Day. Results will continue to be on the county’s website and social media platforms as they are made available, according to Pinal County’s website.

According to Pinal County, Proposition 486 has 104,366 (77.96%) yes votes and 29,502 (22.04%) no votes.

Pinal County’s half-cent excise tax for road maintenance originally passed in 1986, was renewed in 2005, and is set to expire at the end of 2026 unless it is approved by voters Nov. 5.

A “yes” vote extends the tax until 2046. The 20-year continuation of the tax is projected to generate $800 million to $1.2 billion in revenue and be used for road repair, pothole repair, road widening, road preservation, new road construction, intersection improvements and traffic safety improvements, according to Pinal County.
