Construction is taking place around the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center this week.
DBA Construction is demolishing the existing sidewalk and entrance ramp on the north side of the senior center at 330 N. Pinal St.
This upgrade will provide an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant access and walkway to the entrance. Construction is expected to end on Friday.
During construction, access to the north parking area from Pinal Street and the north parking lot will be closed. Access to the east parking area from Eighth Street will remain open.
The money for the improvements comes from a federal Community Block Development Grant.
In February 2024, the Florence Town Council voted to approve a subrecipient agreement between Pinal County and the town for funds provided through the grant.
The center and Heritage Park shared more than $197,000 to make ADA improvements to the properties.
Under the agreement, non-ADA compliant curb ramps are being replaced at the center with new ramps that meet ADA guidelines, ADA parking spaces are being re-stripped and ADA parking signs are being replaced.
At Heritage Park, the grant money paid for the installation of about 50 linear feet of ADA-compliant sidewalks, the completion of ADA restroom improvements and the installation of poured-in-place rubber ground cover around the new playground equipment.
Under the agreement Pinal County ensured “compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and requirements applicable to the procurement and construction of the project,” according to a council staff report.
The town was responsible for all project work, including procuring construction services, easement documentation, permitting, reporting and construction management, the report stated.
