PebbleCreek Rotary to award five $1,000 Outstanding Senior scholarships

The Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek is looking for five outstanding high school seniors interested in receiving a $1,000 scholarship for higher education.

The club will select one graduating senior from Agua Fria, Desert Edge, Millenium and Verrado high schools in Agua Fria Union High School District, and Estrella Falls High School in Buckeye Union High School District, said Vocational Committee Chair Shelly Hornback, who is heading up the scholarship program.

Seniors interested in applying for the Outstanding Student Scholarship must email their applications and transcripts to hornback@lesd.k12.az.us by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 12. Winners will be notified Wednesday, April 22.

To be eligible for a scholarship, the student must be a current senior at one of the five high schools, have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5, a minimum of 200 documented community service hours throughout their high school career through programs like Interact, National Honor Society, student government and others, and have participated in at least two clubs or sports throughout high school.

“Our motto is ‘People of Action,’ so we’re looking for kids of action,” Ms. Hornback said, noting that the scholarship places a heavy emphasis on service.

In addition to describing their community service, future plans, how they plan to pay for college and other scholarships they have applied for or received, students must submit a 300-word essay describing what Rotary’s Four-Way Test means to them.

The one-time scholarship award may be applied to tuition at universities, community colleges or vocational programs, and will be mailed to the student’s educational institution upon proof of enrollment.

For questions or more information, email hornback@lesd.k12.az.us.
