Goodyear joins other Valley cities in declaring state of emergency

Posted

The city of Goodyear joined other municipalities around the Valley in declaring a state of emergency Thursday night in response to COVID-19, the coronavirus.

“This is not in any way meant to cause panic. It’s quite the opposite,” Mayor Georgia Lord said in a video posted to the city’s website and Facebook page announcing she had signed an emergency declaration. “This is to ensure that we have the resources and decision-making abilities necessary to take care of our residents in these uncertain times.”

The declaration will allow the city to more quickly access financial assistance from the state and federal government, if available, to take all reasonable and necessary action to protect and preserve the safety and welfare of citizens and city employees while maintaining the highest level of services; and to continue to support the local business community during and after the emergency declaration, Ms. Lord said.

The declaration also requires all Goodyear citizens and businesses to obey the law and cooperate with public officials in the effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Maricopa County Department of Health, and the Arizona State Department of Health Services. It will remain in effect until further notice.

“I have faith in our residents to help one another, and confidence that our businesses are doing everything they can to protect their employees, and our community,” Ms. Lord said in the video. “We’ve been through tough times before, and we will bounce back stronger than ever.”

Goodyear City Hall remains open for business, but residents are encouraged to utilize online services if possible, including for bill payment. To see a list of impacted city events and facilities, visit www.goodyearaz.gov/coronavirus
