Gompers Private School, a Phoenix school designed for children with multiple disabilities, surprised Breena Spann by honoring her graduation from eighth grade with a drive-by celebration at her Goodyear home.

The transition to online learning this spring was challenging for Breena, 14, who flourishes in an environment featuring physical contact with her school community.

Her teacher, Jasmyn Gonzalez, understands Breena and has worked with her and her mom, Katie Maruna, to keep Breena on track.

“Breena’s teacher at Gompers, Jasmyn, has been very active in helping Breena learn and adjust to the situation and get some sort of education in this virtual learning process,” Ms. Maruna stated in a news release. “Breena’s current Zoom meetings with Jasmyn consist of book reading and praises that she is doing a good job. Breena is usually sitting on my lap or right next to me on the couch so I can give her hugs and kisses for Jasmyn.”

After weeks of hard work, Breena started to enjoy school again. Gompers surprised her with a drive-by celebration at her Goodyear home.
