Sherwood Johnston III has been appointed San Tan justice of the peace.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors selected Johnston to replace Sam Goodman, who retired Nov. 30.

“Sherwood Johnston’s extensive experience as a justice of the peace pro tem and hearing officer make him a natural fit for this office,” said Supervisor Jack Sellers, whose District 1 includes the San Tan court.

“Johnston is a seasoned, performance-driven judicial officer. In addition to serving the justice courts, he has over 30 years of judicial experience serving the town of Paradise Valley’s Municipal Court.”

Since Goodman was a Republican, state law required the board to appoint another Republican to fill his position until the next election.

Johnston, who has served in the Maricopa County justice courts for 17 years, will fulfill the remainder of the current term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2024, according to a release.

The San Tan district spans from Gilbert Road on the west to Meridian on the east and from Hunt Highway on the south to McKellips in the north.
