Man dies in Chandler officer-involved shooting

Mesa police investigating Aug. 29 incident

Posted

A man was killed Thursday night in an officer-involved shooting after Chandler police said he pulled out a gun while officers were at a home in the 600 block of West Barrow Drive.

Chandler officers responded just before 9 p.m. Aug. 29 to the home after receiving a call from a family member concerned that a man at the residence was suicidal.

The family member told police the suspect, who was in his 30s, had made suicidal statements and fired a weapon in an alley outside the home, according to a Chandler Police Department release.

When the police arrived, an officer contacted the caller, who said he had taken the weapon from the suspect. He invited police into the home, the release stated.

“At this time, the suspect was inside the garage with another family member. The officer entered the garage and attempted to talk to the suspect. Seconds later, the suspect withdrew a gun from his waistband,” and the shooting occurred, according to the release.

The suspect was pronounced dead after life-saving measures were attempted, police said.

No officers were injured.

The Mesa Police Department will investigate the shooting.
