Sutter Masonry donates trailer to West-MEC construction students

Posted

Construction students at Southwest Campus of the Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC)–a public career technical education district–received a trailer donation from Sutter Masonry. The trailer helps students transport materials to job sites and competitions for career-based training.

“Sutter Masonry believes in West-MEC’s vision and mission of preparing students to be career ready when graduating high school. The young men and women are the future of our industry and we are honored to support the students and school with donations of materials, instruction and equipment,” said president of Sutter Masonry Adam Waltho.

Sutter Masonry serves as a member of the construction program’s advisory council. Every West-MEC program has an advisory council that invites business and industry to be part of the learning process. Members of the advisory council make suggestions for what equipment to invest in, share popular techniques being used in the workforce, provide scholarship and internship opportunities, and promote career and technical education (CTE) in their industry.

“The involvement of business and industry is critical to the success of CTE programs,” said Southwest Campus administrator Jarett Guy. “Donations of equipment or monetary value are great, but the most valuable investment we can ask for is human capital. When an industry is willing to invest time and energy to work alongside our students or support work-based learning opportunities both on and off-campus, it is worth its weight in gold. Work-based learning is an integral piece to our overall CTE learning model, and we need industry involvement to make those experiences more meaningful for students.”
