Police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect Thursday following a pursuit by Goodyear and Buckeye officers, authorities said.
Officers were attempting to arrest the person suspected of an armed robbery on Jan. 15 of the Happy Cat Smoke Shop at Roosevelt Street and 155th Avenue in Goodyear.
At about 1 p.m. on Jan. 19, Goodyear police found the suspect near 75th Avenue and Broadway and attempted to take him into custody with help from Buckeye SWAT before he fled, according to a release.
Police said they attempted to use “less lethal means” before the pursuit began westbound on Southern Avenue toward 75th Avenue, where authorities surrounded the suspect’s vehicle.
“Unfortunately, it escalated to a lethal confrontation,” the Goodyear Police Department release stated.
“The suspect was shot by police. Lifesaving measures were performed on scene and the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene. A handgun was recovered on scene near the suspect.”
No officers were injured, and the Glendale Police Department is conducting an investigation of the shooting.
