CANCELED: Buckeye modifying Independence Day celebration for COVID-19 safety

UPDATE June 23, 2020: CANCELED

The city of Buckeye’s annual Fourth of July celebration will still go on this year, but it will be a little different than in the past, thanks to COVID-19.

This year’s event, scheduled for 8:45 p.m. Saturday, July 4 has been modified to comply with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on large gatherings of people and physical distancing recommendations, city spokeswoman Annie DeChance stated in a release.

“Unfortunately, this means there will be no live entertainment, food and beverage sales, or family activities this year,” she stated, encouraging residents to pack snacks and drinks and head to Youngker High School to enjoy the 20-minute fireworks display from their vehicles.

“Residents can enjoy the fireworks from either inside their vehicles or within their designated parking spot,” Ms. DeChance stated. “All food and drinks must also be contained within your vehicle or parking spot. Arizona State law does not permit the consumption of alcohol in vehicles or public spaces.”

Those who live nearby are encouraged to enjoy the show from their yards.

Limited parking will open at 7:30 p.m. and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some streets surrounding Youngker High, 3000 South Apache Road, will be closed for the public’s safety.
