Buckeye City Council fills District 6 vacancy

Posted

The Buckeye City Council voted Tuesday, June 2 to appoint Clay Goodman, PhD as the interim District 6 representative.

He replaces Eric Orsborne, who resigned in April to run for mayor.

Mr. Goodman is an Arizona native who has lived in the West Valley for 28 years and in Verrado since 2012. He and his wife, Lynda, have two grown children and one grandson.

Mr. Goodman is the fossil generation training manager for Arizona Public Service. In this role, he is responsible for the leadership and technical training for six APS power plants in both Arizona and New Mexico.

Prior to joining APS, he enjoyed a successful 25-year career at Estrella Mountain Community College before retiring in 2015. At EMCC, Mr. Goodman served as vice president of Academic Affairs, vice president Occupational Education and vice president Administrative Services.

He was instrumental in acquiring and remodeling the old Buckeye High School into the EMCC Buckeye Education Center. In addition, he played a key role in the facility design and programs for the WestMEC campus on Verrado Way.

“I’m pleased with the direction the city is headed,” Mr. Goodman said. “The Buckeye City Council and city management are working cohesively to ensure the city continues to grow while improving the quality of life for residents.”

Sixteen candidates applied for the vacant position. A council subcommittee consisting of the three current councilmembers not running for re-election, Mayor Jackie A. Meck, Vice Mayor Craig Heustis and Councilman Patrick HagEstad, recommended Mr. Goodman for the interim position.

Mr. Goodman was sworn in Tuesday evening. His term will run through 2022.

District 6 boundaries are Northern Avenue to Yuma Road, Perryville Road to Miller north of Interstate 10, and Perryville to approximately 223rd Avenue south of 1-10. The district includes the Verrado community and other subdivisions including Arroyo Seco North and South, Blue Horizons, Buckeye Parkway Center, Canyon Views, Paloma Vista, Phoenix Skyline West, Sienna Hills, Sundance, Valencia Heights and Windmill Village.
