BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona prison inmate who was serving a 22 year sentence for second-degree murder has died after he apparently hanged himself in his cell, prison officials announced Thursday.
Prison staff found Anthony P. Rinaldi, 36, in his cell at the Lewis Prison southwest of Buckeye on Wednesday. He was unresponsive and was pronounced dead after paramedics took him to a hospital for treatment.
Records maintained by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry show Rinaldi's death if the first by suicide since the fiscal year began on July 1. In the previous 12 months, ten inmates died by suicide.
Rinaldi was convicted in Maricopa County for a 2011 murder and two lesser charges and sent to prison in 2013.
His death will be investigated by prison officials and the county medical examiner’s office.
