We must not be silenced by fear of unbridled authoritarians

Posted

The following was read at the April 2 Pinal County Board of Supervisor meeting:

Today’s agenda presents a surreal environment that should make us all feel uncomfortable. Approving a National Crime Victims Rights Proclamation, and a National Public Health Week Proclamation. Good proclamations.

But they come at a time when all of us have become victims of an unprosecuted perpetrator of crime.

Victims of the Jan. 6 attempt at overthrowing a presidential election. A crime for which an unapologetic Donald Trump has not been held accountable.

No accountability for presidential executive orders that threaten our personal security, public health and constitutional freedoms of us all.

No public discussion about the hundreds of victims currently being denied our Constitution’s first amendment right of freedom of speech. Victims snatched off American streets, arrested and detained without criminal charges, others deported without due process.

No discussion of our 23 states’ lawsuit against the Trump administration’s denial of some $11 billion for public health, mental health and addiction services.

No accountability for Trump’s chaotic executive orders affecting Pinal County’s economy, public health, schools, environment, work force, roads and highways, and sanctuary of churches.

Despite this display of intentional negligence of these threats, the American public is still free enough to dare confront the undeniable display of fascism emanating from Washington.

We must not be silenced by fear of unbridled authoritarians at any level of governance. I encourage fellow defenders of our Constitution to join in resistance to these threats facing us all.

Dare to speak out, dare to peaceably assemble. Dare to demand accountability.
