Do you have a pre-teen or teenager looking for something to do this summer? Why not have them work at the aquatic center in Apache Junction?

Gain valuable work experience, learn how to work as part of a team and help educate the community on water safety while having fun. It is a positive environment to work in and the city has  opportunities for those age 11 and older, according to a release.

Human resources at the city of Apache Junction is now accepting applications for lifeguards and water safety instructors for the 2021 season. Applicants must have a current lifeguard or water safety instructor certification or be enrolled in a certification class. All job and volunteer applications can be found online under the “jobs/volunteer” tab on the city website at ajcity.net.

For those who will be 15 by March 12, the lifeguard training class is being offered over spring break – March 8-12. Learn valuable job skills including customer service, teamwork and responsibility along with the lifesaving skills necessary to keep people safe at the pool, the release states.

The city is also offering a water safety instructor class for those interested in teaching swim lessons. Candidates must be 16 by March 20. Class will be done in a blended learning style, with bookwork and videos completed at home and water skills in person at the pool. In-person sessions will be 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, March 12, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays, March 13 and 20.

Not yet old enough to work but would like to gain valuable work experience? Join the jr. lifeguard team. Jr. lifeguarding is a volunteer program designed for kids ages 11-14 who work closely with the aquatic staff and gain knowledge about what it takes to be a lifeguard or water safety instructor. They will learn important skills that can transition them into a paying job in the future. The volunteers earn credits that can be used for any program offered through Apache Junction Parks and Recreation. Attending a jr. lifeguard training class is required for first time jr. guards. The city is offering two training class options — March 19 and April 10. Registration for classes can be done online or in person at 1035 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction.

Returning jr. lifeguards do not need to attend this training again; simply go online and submit a Jr. Lifeguard Volunteer application. Applications must be submitted no later than May 1.

For more information on this program, contact Jill Ruot at jruot@apachejunctionaz.gov or 480-474-5248. For other program and service information, contact the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Department at 480-983-2181 or go to ajcity.net/parks.
