'Seussical The Musical' Fridays, Saturdays through March 7 at Zao Theatre

"Seussical The Musical" is coming to Zao Theatre Feb. 21-March 7, with show times Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on Saturdays at 2 p.m.

This highly acclaimed musical is based on at least 15 of the Dr. Seuss' books.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and other characters from his whimsical imagination come together in this musical featuring a score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton, an elephant who hears a noise coming from a speck of dust. Horton soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe.

Moreover, on this tiny planet lives a race of creatures known as the Whos. Jojo, a misfit Who child who thinks too many “thinks” struggles to find his place in the tiny Who society. But this is only the beginning of Horton’s problems. He now faces a serious challenge believing that he must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers.

In the inevitable style of Dr. Seuss, Horton pleads his case to the creatures of the jungle.

All of the other animals in the Jungle of Nool make fun of Horton for believing in something he cannot see, (and they can’t, either) but Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist.

Traveling everywhere from the Jungle of Nool to McEligott’s Pool, some of the characters fall in love–some have desperate adventures, but ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community, though challenged, emerge triumphant.

We all remember the joy of Dr. Seuss books back during our early school years. Now, all those wonderfully imaginative characters come back to life on the Zao stage.

"Seussical The Musical" recalls a grand measure of fun for those of us old enough to remember the good Dr. Seuss back when, but it is ever fresh enough for the generations to enjoy who have yet to be introduced to the wonderful, wacky world of Dr. Seuss.
