Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow award given posthumously to Robert Homann

Posted

The Rotary Club of Superstition Mountain in Apache Junction and Gold Canyon recently presented posthumously a Paul Harris Fellow award in honor of the years of dedication and Rotary service of Dr. H. Robert “Bob” Homann.

Mr. Homann touched lives for many years as a professor of chemistry and chair of the chemistry department and the CREDO Program, a program designed for the “high ability, highly motivated student” and educating college students at Concordia College in Morehead, Minnesota, according to a release.

In 1962 he married Dorothy and in 1964 Mr. Homann received his PhD in biochemistry and Dorothy a bachelor's degree in microbiology.

In 1999 they moved to Gold Canyon and in 2000 Mr. Homann became the dean of facility at Waldorf University, Forest City, Iowa, where he helped the college grow from a two-year to four-year college.

Mr. Homann believed Rotary had a great mission in service and served Rotary in multiple clubs and capacities including assistant district governor; president; treasurer; secretary; and, at Superstition Mountain, as newsletter editor, producing detailed articles and press releases of guest speakers. He was an avid note taker, ensuring the accuracy of the articles. He was also active in his church in Gold Canyon and the Arts Council and loved to sing, the release states.

His impact and dedication to the community and his positive spirit epitomized the Rotary vision of “Service Above Self.” The people whose lives he touched, his accomplishments within the communities of Gold Canyon/Apache Junction, Morehead, Minnesota, and Forest City, Iowa, set an example for Rotarians everywhere.

The presentation of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for Rotary’s founder, a Chicago lawyer, who started the Rotary organization with three business associates in 1905.

Rotary Club President Harvey Clark and Elizabeth Mahoney, Rotary 5495 district governor, presented this distinguished award.

“In becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, many times over, Bob joins a remarkable company of persons throughout the world. They are recognized for their devotion to the ideal of good will, peace and understanding ... a goal of Rotarians the world over, and one that Bob and Dorothy clearly shared. It gives me great pleasure to present Dorothy and the family with the emblems of appreciation given to a Paul Harris Fellow – a certificate and pin. We congratulate Bob and we thank Dorothy for her continued support and commitment to the programs of this club and becoming the club secretary for this Rotary year 2020-21," the release states.

Paul Harris said: “He who tries to find the good in others will be rewarded, for others will surely find the good in him. Of all the earth’s sad and lonesome creatures, the most helpless is he who loves not his fellowmen.”

Rotary International is a 501(c)3 organization with 1.2 million members in 200 countries. Locally, Superstition Mountain Rotary Club was chartered in January 1961 and will celebrate 60 years in 2021.

The club has 40 members who meet at The Gold Canyon Golf Resort, 6100 Kings Ranch Road, every Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. as well as virtually via Zoom.

Weekly meetings offer guest speakers who provide information about businesses and services in and around the area. The club is open to additional members who are interested in being of service to the community.
