Professional tour of pickleball at Legacy Sports Park in 2022

Posted

Legacy Sports USA announced recently that it has added another premier pickleball event to its roster of elite sports at Legacy Sports Park, which is set to open in January 2022 in Mesa.

It is partnering with the Pro Pickleball Association to host a PPA Tour event every February for the next five years at the 320-acre, multi-use family sports and entertainment complex, according to a release.

The PPA Tour will kick off its new partnership with Legacy Sports USA next year with the Foot Solutions Arizona Grand Slam, which will take place Feb. 16-20. The event will welcome the top pros in the world and feature a hefty payout to all pro divisions.

Legacy Sports Park’s state-of-the-art pickleball facility features a total of 41 pickleball courts, including a 2,500-seat covered Stadium Court, as well as four medal courts. This marks the second professional Pickleball Tour to commit to hosting events at Legacy Sports Park – the APP Tour signed a 10-year deal in May.

“We are really excited to partner with the Pro Pickleball Association and host PPA Tour events at Legacy Sports Park for the next five years,” Brett Miller, president of Legacy Sports USA, said in the release. “We are extremely proud of our (41) court pickleball sports complex and can’t wait to showcase those facilities for the PPA Tour and all of the other pickleball events and fans that will be hosted in 2022.”

The PPA Tour is the Professional Tour of Pickleball, showcasing the finest male and female athletes in all of pickleball. The 2022 PPA Tour season will feature some of the biggest tournaments in pickleball history and encompass 20 events — including five world-class Majors) — in 13 U.S. states and one Canadian province. The PPA Tour welcomes both professional and amateur pickleball players and prides itself on creating an elite pickleball experience for everyone, the release states.

Some of the top-ranked pros who are contracted PPA athletes and are competing exclusively on the PPA Tour include Ben Johns, Matt Wright, Tyson McGuffin, Riley Newman, Collin Johns, Simone Jardin, Lucy Kovalova, Catherine Parenteau, Jessie Irvine, Callie Smith, Dekel Bar, Jeffery Warnick, Joey Farias, Kyle Yates, Irina Tereschenko, Leigh Waters, Anna Leigh Waters and Tyler Loong.

The PPA Tour debuts its new tournament breakdown in 2022 which splits events into four categories — Majors, 1,000s, 500s and 250s. Each category features a staggered system of points awarded to players based on their results that determine future tournament seedings, rankings and end-of-season champions. As a PPA 1000, the Foot Solutions Arizona Grand Slam will welcome thousands of players and spectators and will be broadcasted live to ESPN+ as well as other national networks.

“While we are so grateful for the tremendous growth that we’ve seen thus far, we adhere to our promise to make the PPA Tour bigger and better with each passing year,” Connor Pardoe, commissioner of the PPA, said in the release. “We feel that we owe it to our players and fans to continually outperform expectations and surpass new milestones. Our recent partnership with Legacy Sports USA does just that, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

The PPA Tour traditionally awards the highest payouts in professional pickleball and will have paid out more than $1 million during the 2021 season. Prize money for 2022 is being finalized and will be announced in July 2021. For a list of upcoming events or for more information on the PPA Tour, go to ppatour.com.

Legacy Sports Park is a privately owned, 320-acre multi-use family sports and entertainment complex in Mesa currently under construction with plans to officially open to the public in January 2022. Legacy Sports Park will create more than 1,500 jobs and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in direct economic impact back to the surrounding community, with an expected $3 million visitors annually, the release states.

Legacy Sports Park is the vision of Randy J. Miller, chairman of Legacy Sports USA; Chad J. Miller, CEO of Legacy Sports USA; and Olympic Gold Medalist Dan O’Brien, director of performance training at Legacy Sports Park. In addition, Legacy Sports Park will include a multi-purpose arena and outdoor amphitheater designed for live events, family shows, exhibitions and conventions. The project will be developed in one single phase constructing outdoor and indoor team athletic facilities geared to high-energy entertainment and sports venues.
