Poston Butte Broncos dominate Apache Junction Prospectors, 86-19

The Poston Butte Broncos (0-3) matched up away from home against the Apache Junction Prospectors (0-9) at Apache Junction High School on Dec. 8. Both teams were looking for their first wins of the season.

On a breezy Thursday night, the Prospectors won the tip-off to start the game. Unfortunately, this may have been the only bright spot on the night for them as the Broncos started off hot, jumping out to an early lead. And some great defense halted the Prospectors at nine points at the end of the quarter. Sophomore Dutch Martinez Jr. of the Broncos pulled off a buzzer-beater from three to end the quarter 27-9 with a Broncos’ lead.

Martinez continued his dominance into the second, hitting multiple threes and contributing to the great defensive performance Poston Butte showed. As they halted the Prospectors to a mere two points in the second quarter, while extending their lead to 51-11 to end the half.

After a 10-minute break, the second half continued and very similar themes remained constant throughout the rest of the game. Andre Thomas of the Broncos had a nice dunk and the Broncos slowly started to gas the Prospectors, as they scored another nineteen points in the half. Moving the score to 70-16 at the conclusion of the third.

The fourth quarter was almost entirely possessed by the Broncos, as they moved the ball around effortlessly to put on the brakes in an effort to not run up the score. However, the Prospectors continued to turnover the ball and Butte were still able to put up 16 points in the final quarter of the game to cap the score at 86-19.
