Patriotic flag exchange event on Flag Day in Apache Junction

Posted

In celebration of Flag Day, the Apache Junction Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Nos. 7968 and 9399 auxiliaries, in conjunction with the city of Apache Junction, will host an American flag exchange on Saturday, June 14.

The event will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park gazebo, 1001 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction, according to a release.

During the event, community members are invited to bring old, worn-out flags and exchange them for a new 3-foot-by-5-foot American flag. One flag may be exchanged per person for the first 249 flags available, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Event organizers will also properly dispose of the old, traded flags. Attendees will also have the opportunity to spin a prize wheel to win local city of Apache Junction flags as well as other promotional items.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend, as the event will also feature a Pledge of Allegiance challenge for children ages 14 and under. Each child that can recite the Pledge of Allegiance will receive a goodie bag as a prize.

Observed annually across the U.S., Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the first U.S. flag by Continental Congress in the First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. Although the 200-year anniversary of this date was celebrated by flying flags on public buildings and holding remembrances in several cities, Flag Day wasn’t officially recognized until President Harry Truman signed it into law in 1949.
