The summer heat is here and with it comes monsoon season, officially beginning June 15. These storms can bring heavy rains, high winds, and flash flooding, so preparation is key to keeping your property and the community safe.

If you live in a flood-prone area, here are a few important steps to take, according to the city of Apache Junction:

  • Clear debris: Make sure drainage areas around your home are free of leaves, trash, and other blockages to prevent clogs.
  • Secure loose items: High winds can turn everyday objects into hazards.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and trim tree limbs.
  • Clear small washes: Maintain washes near your property to help control stormwater runoff and reduce flood risk.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: A 72-hour kit with water, non-perishable food, flashlights, medications, and other essentials can be a lifesaver.

The Superstition Fire & Medical District provides free sandbags — bring your own shovel — 24/7 at the following locations:

  • Fire Station No. 261, 1135 W. Superstition Blvd.
  • Fire Station No. 262, 3995 E. Superstition Blvd.
  • Fire Station No. 264, 7557 E. U.S. Highway 60, Gold Canyon

Pinal County also provides sand and bags at 305 E. Superstition Blvd., Apache Junction — limited hours, bring your own shovel. More information on their hours and other locations may be found at https://www.pinal.gov/1517/Flood-Safety.

Monsoon safety is a shared responsibility. For more detailed information and resources, visit Arizona’s official monsoon awareness page at https://ein.az.gov/monsoon-awareness.
