Girls on the Run to be offered at Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center

Girls on the Run registration for the spring 2021 season is now open.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in third through fifth grades to be joyful, healthy and confident. The volunteer-led program brings together groups of 6 to 14 girls for an eight-week program that encourages personal development, team building and connection to the community, according to a release.

The program has inspired girls in the Apache Junction area for over 11 seasons and has impacted the lives of over 60 girls. Jasmine, a 2014 participant, has been very successful on her high school’s track team and said she probably wouldn’t have joined had she not participated in the Girls on the Run program, the release states.

This season, Girls on the Run — third to fifth grades — will be offered in-person at the Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center, 1035 N. Idaho Road. Each team will meet two times a week for 90 minutes and participate in research-based lessons that use dynamic discussions and fun running games to teach life skills. The season will culminate in a 5K event that brings together family, friends and community members to celebrate the girls’ growth throughout the season.

The 2021 season runs February through April with the final 5K held on Saturday, April 24 (in-person or virtual, to be determined). Physical distancing and safety measures will be in place as necessary at each practice. Should the need arise; it can switch to a virtual-based program.

Due to a donation from Lost Dutchman Marathon Inc., the program fee is reduced to $25, which includes program materials, T-shirt and the end-of-season final 5K registration fee. For more information about the program and to register, go to the Girls on the Run of Maricopa County website, www.gotrmc.org.

For more information about the teams offered through Parks and Recreation, contact Jill Ruot at 480-474-5248 or jruot@ajcity.net.
