The Superstition Fire and Medical District board will have meetings Feb. 11 and 12 that include closed-door executive sessions to discuss the recruitment and selection of a fire chief.

Thursday’s special board meeting starts at 1 p.m. and Friday’s meeting starts at 8 a.m. at the Administration Office, 565 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction. The meetings are open to the public or by phone conference at 480-646-1864 pin 1234.

After the call to the public section of the meeting, the board may vote to go into executive session “for personnel matters re: consideration of employment candidate interviews and ... for legal advice; re: pending fire chief’s employment issues; the recruitment and selection of the fire chief position,” according to the agendas.

Following the confidential executive sessions, the board is slated to discuss and possibly give direction regarding the fire chief selection process.

The Superstition Fire and Medical District selected the executive search firm Ralph Andersen and Associates to conduct a comprehensive fire chief selection and hiring process, according to sfmd.az.gov/join/job-openings.

Under the direction of the governing board, the fire chief oversees a budget of $23.7 million through four divisions, each led by an assistant chief or a director. They are: emergency services operations, which includes transport; planning and logistics; administrative services; and financial services.

The annual salary range for the position is $147,403 to $184,134 and placement in the range will be made based upon the overall qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, according to a brochure here.

The selected candidate is to join the Superstition Fire and Medical District in mid-May 2021 or a mutually agreed upon date, it states.

The fire district provides fire suppression, fire prevention, wildland protection, advanced life support, rescue, extrication and medical transportation services out of five fire stations: Fire Station 261, 1135 W Superstition Blvd. in Apache Junction; Fire Station 262, 3955 E. Superstition Blvd. in Apache Junction; Fire Station 263, 1645 S. Idaho Road in Apache Junction; Fire Station 264, 7557 E. U.S. Highway 60 in Gold Canyon; and Fire Station 265, 9294 E. Don Donnelly Trail in Gold Canyon.
